World Heritage Site

Circular GRP Column Casings

Set alongside the historic town of Caernarfon and overlooking the isle of Anglesey, Victoria Docks is a modern harbour-side development located on a World Heritage Site, containing hotels, bars, restaurants, commercial units and business centres.

As part of this significant project, the design team at Contour Casings were charged with delivering an extensive range of Column Casing solutions to cover up the problem of unsightly building structures. Encasement systems were required which were highly durable, and which both enhanced the aesthetic of the development and also provided functional services, such as enclosing rainwater systems.

Identifying the most suitable encasement system from Contour’s vast selection of sizes, shapes, finishes and materials, was a key consideration for the design team working on this World Heritage Site. The system which satisfied the precise requirements of the project was Contour’s GRP (Glass Reinforced Polymer) column casing.

GRP encasement systems are suitable for internal and external applications, but were chosen for their long life and low maintenance qualities, particularly useful for coastal or hostile regions. Contour supplied column casings in both circular and rectangular designs and in a variety of heights and widths.

The rectangular casings, located on the upper floor balcony, were designed to incorporate internal rainwater systems, allowing water to drain from the roof while still maintaining a sleek and professional finish to the building exterior.

Leigh Simpson, Managing Director at Contour Casings, said, “We are delighted to be working on such a significant development as Victoria Docks. Our extensive and flexible range of encasement systems contains a column casing suitable for application in any environment, always guaranteeing a pleasing, appropriate aesthetic and robust construction. Now firmly established as a market leader, we employ the latest design software to deliver a professional, yet cost-effective encasement solution, alongside our customer-focused approach”.
