Contour has recently completed design and manufacture of made-to-measure anti-ligature smoke detectors covers, for a NHS Mental Health Trust.
In common with our latest anti-ligature radiator guards, the covers’ ventilation grilles make use of 2mm diameter holes set at 4mm centres in a triangular pitch formation, punched directly into a sheet steel material. This ensures that the grille pattern is compliant with anti-ligature requirements as set out in The Home Office Police Buildings Design Guide – Custody, July 2009, section PD3.02.14.
In addition, the use of 2mm holes ensures that the grille exceeds the requirements of the British Standards IP3x (BS EN 60529) test measuring for Ingress Protection against objects greater than 2.5mm in diameter.
The external dimensions of the cover shown are 200x200x100mm, however these covers can be fabricated to virtually whatever dimensions a project dictates.
As with almost all of Contour’s fabrications, the covers can be finished in any RAL or BS colour available. As an added measure to ensure the well-being of service users, a BioCote® anti-microbial additive is available as standard on covers finished in RAL 9003 White. BioCote is also available as an option with other colour finishes.
The covers are just one example of our ever growing range of anti-ligature products, specifically designed to meet the safety and security needs of mental health service providers and secure custody facilities.

Please note: Contour cannot guarantee that the performance of a smoke detector protected by an anti-ligature cover will not be affected, as the size of the grille holes can affect air circulation within the cover.
